Negotiation Strategies for Freelancers

Many Nigerian freelancers lose clients because they don’t know how to negotiate.
Here’s how to negotiate like a pro after you’ve learned a skill and you’re good at it:

1. Know Your Value (Show Proof)

People pay when they see:

  • examples
  • case studies
  • testimonials
  • before/after samples

Your proof is more powerful than your price.

2. Ask Questions Before Giving Your Price

Instead of saying:

“My price is ₦50,000”

Ask:

  • What are your goals?
  • What do you want the design or website to achieve?
  • What is your timeline?
  • What resources do you have?

Then quote based on their need.

3. Offer Packages, Not Just One Price

Example:
Bronze: ₦20,000 (basic)
Silver: ₦40,000 (standard)
Gold: ₦70,000 (premium)

Clients love options.

4. Don’t Rush to Reduce Your Price

If someone says:

“It’s too expensive.”

You can reply:

“I understand. Here’s a smaller package that fits your budget.”

Never beg.

5. State Your Terms Clearly

Mention:

  • number of revisions
  • timeline
  • what’s included
  • what’s not included
  • payment structure

Clarity prevents stress.

6. Always Ask for Upfront Payment

Even if it’s:

  • 30%
  • 50%
  • or a small commitment fee

Serious clients won’t fight this.

7. Know When to Walk Away

Not every client is worth your peace.
Some will drain your time, energy, and creativity.

Sometimes walking away is the smartest business decision.

Share it with a friend. Great things grow when shared:
