Digital Skills Every Small Business Owner Should Learn First

October 26, 2026 · 4 min read

Your business is growing. You are busy. So you think: “I will just hire someone for the digital side.”

That can work. But owners who know the basics hire better.

They can tell good work from bad work. They write clearer briefs. And they do not overpay for something they do not understand.

Here are 7 digital skills to learn before you hire anyone. You can start each one in a weekend.

Why learn first, then hire?

  • You can judge quality, so you stop guessing.
  • You can give clear instructions, so you get better results.
  • You can spot when someone is overcharging or overpromising.
  • You can step in when your helper is away.

The 7 skills

1. Track your money in a spreadsheet

What to learn: Record income and costs. Use SUM and SUMIF. Make a simple monthly summary.

Good looks like: You know your profit for last month in under 5 minutes.

2. Have a clear online presence

What to learn: Set up your business profile on maps and social media. Keep your name, hours, phone number and links the same everywhere.

Good looks like: A stranger searching your name finds the right information fast.

3. Make simple, consistent designs

What to learn: Use an easy design tool, such as Canva. Pick two colors, one or two fonts and your logo. Reuse them.

Good looks like: Your posts, flyers and invoices look like they come from one business.

4. Talk to customers quickly and clearly

What to learn: Write short messages. Save replies for common questions. Answer within a set time.

Good looks like: Customers get a helpful reply the same day.

5. Understand basic marketing

What to learn: Know who your customers are. Pick one channel and do it well. Start an email or message list.

Good looks like: You can say where your last 10 customers came from.

6. Read your numbers

What to learn: Look at sales by week, best products and busiest days. Make one simple chart.

Good looks like: You change one thing each month because of what the numbers show.

7. Stay safe online

What to learn: Use strong, different passwords. Turn on two step sign in. Back up your files. Spot scam emails and fake payment messages.

Good looks like: You could lose a laptop and not lose your business.

A weekend plan

  • Saturday morning: Set up your money spreadsheet.
  • Saturday afternoon: Fix your online profiles so they match.
  • Sunday morning: Create your design kit: colors, fonts and logo.
  • Sunday afternoon: Write your 5 most useful saved replies and turn on two step sign in.

When it is time to hire

Once you understand a task, you can pass it on with confidence.

  • Write what you want done, how it should look and how you will check it.
  • Start with a small paid test task.
  • Agree on the price and the deadline in writing.

Train your team too

If you have staff, the same skills help them.
